Anyone who has read most posts on my blog, and I suspect there is only one person to have done that and that's me, would know that I have and do ramble a lot about being happy and finding happiness. As someone who knows no moderation when it comes to feeling, I've been running after happiness for many years, without success. I've tried everything and yet I have never been in a continued state of being happy, ever. This is not to say that my life sucks, infact I have pretty much everything that is required for a comfortable and should've-been-happy life. There have been times when I've been insanely 'happy' but that never lasts.

And then, all of a sudden, matters of bigger importance took over and my 'Pursuit of Happyness' took a backseat. The year of 2013 presented two extreme phases in its two halves. I faced the most crushing failure I've faced in my young life and then, in the latter half, I found what I was looking for all these years. 1st July, 2013 was the day the rest of my life began. I was on the road to my salvation, without even knowing it. I discovered things about myself I never knew. In a place away from all the added comforts of a television, a PC, internet, friends, with just the basic needs of a roof over my head and a bed to sleep on, I found God.

I've always been a hard-working person. It is in my DNA. But what I did in those 6 months wasn't hard work, it never felt like work. I read and I read but never did it feel like I was doing something foreign or something that required energy. The one time I did not approach something with the purpose of looking for happiness, well, my idea of it anyway, I found it. I spent those months only studying. It was only books, no family, no friends, no hobbies, nothing. But what I didn't realise was that while I was putting my everything into the purpose in front of me, I was also cleansing my mind unconsciously. My anger, my ever-present anger disappeared. My anger, that had even alienated me from my family, left me. My complaints, so many of them, stopped being complaints at all. I got lighter and I felt it. All the baggage I had been carrying around for no reason disappeared my no conscious effort on my part.
I felt God again. After all these years, I felt His presence. I felt it everywhere I went. Even when I was lying on my bed, waiting for sleep to come, I could feel this incredible energy filling me up and brimming over. And there was no materialistic reason for it. There was nothing to attribute it to. It just was. It just is.

That is what, I then realised, is Happiness. True happiness won't depend on things that you acquire or experiences that you have. True happiness just is. And that is my proof , for God. But this isn't proof that I can give to someone. It is to be achieved and earned and experienced.
Which corner of the world do I go, to escape from myself...

I want to see how far I can go. And then I want to go farther.

A HAPPIER TOMORROW

The world of change a sweet word can bring,
A conscience is what we've been missing
If we just made an effort to be nice,
Swallow our pride and that would suffice.

Rebuild ourselves while helping another
Treat a tired soul as your own brother
Try to untangle the web of despair,
Till there’s no more hate, just love and care.

If we use our power to do some good,
Just do our job and not care about the fruit.
Not pull people down for little things,
Help free them and spread their wings.

If we just think of everyone as a person,
Not a sweeper, an engineer or a fireman,
If we just step out of the illusion of being superior,
Lift someone up, make lives easier.

If we look deep into our own misery,
Realize our faults and all things dreary,
Work on them and set them right,
The world would seem so very bright.

If we just try to be better than yesterday,
Work for mankind in our own sweet way
Blessings we reap from the seeds we sow,
For a happy today and a happier tomorrow.

Why should I be only a dentist? Why should my profession define me?  It's my foremost passion, but why must it be the only thing I am? Why should I give up a hundred other things I can do and a hundred other things I can be because I have a particular degree?

There is no need for a person to be one dimensional. It's kind of an instinct nowadays. Who are you? I'm XYZ, a dentist. Whenever you introduce yourself, right after your name you tell them your profession! I think to a certain extent, it's a class issue! People do it to sometimes exert their superiority. Anyway, that is not my point right now.

I'm on a break right now. I'm done with all my exams and I'm currently not even looking to work anywhere. So I've got a lot of time on my hand to think! I have so much respect for people who give their everything to their work. Day and night, six, sometimes even seven days a week. But where is your life then? I don't know, I might just end up like them and it's not anything to be ashamed of.

But I dread the day I work like that and be okay with it. I dread the day when I have an opportunity to do something I love or travel or something, but I say no because I have to work. I don't want to be just a dentist. I LOVE cooking, gardening, writing, travelling, photography. Reading is like breathing to me. Why should being a dentist mean more than all these other things? When I'm working, I put my everything into it. But I'm so much more. Being a dentist is just one part of what I am.

This is so unlike my opinions till some months back. But I think I'm right. Maybe not for everyone. But I think it'll work for me. I don't want a day when I pick up a book and start reading and say to myself that I've missed reading so much. Why should I miss it? I can do it all the time!

I hope I can keep this up. It's not really easy when everyone around you is working. I recently told my friend about all this and I said ' I don't want to be just a dentist!' and she replied 'What else do you want to be?' in an exasperated tone! I really don't think God intended for us to be doctors or engineers or bankers or whatever. It's us who made that classification. It'll be so sad if I'm on my deathbed thinking about what all I could've done and what all I could've seen. Okay, that was a little dramatic. Sorry! :)

So anyway, I try not to look at others. Others are doing what is right for them and I have to do what is right for me. What is the worst that could happen? I'll probably earn less. But I'll be happy. That is what it is all about right? Happiness.

Great piece! :)
The problem with humans is that we judge too soon, ignore too much, hold too many grudges and forgive too less.
